Quick action stymies blaze

July 4, 2007

Wheatland firefighters got a scare Tuesday afternoon when a fire that charred one field leaped across Wheatland Road toward another.

The blaze is believed to have started somewhere in a field next to the Wheatland Cemetery just after 1 p.m.

Wheatland Fire Chief Darryl Stineman said the exact starting point was likely near Wheatland and Lewis roads, where the fire spread to 5.5 acres.

Wheatland Fire Department called in support from Linda Fire Department to tackle the flames.

At one point, flames jumped across Wheatland Road toward another field but were quickly stopped on the shoulder of the road. The rest of the fire was extinguished within a half hour.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No structures were threatened.
