Google threatens to pull out of China

January 11, 2010

Internet search megalith Google is threatening to pull out of China after human rights activists’ e-mail accounts were breached.

Needless to say I’m shocked.

“But they’re a liberal company whose motto is ‘Do No Evil,’” you might say.

Yes but they’re also not stupid. China is a growing market in terms of tech and has plenty of financial potential for any company that’s willing to modify its policies to fit with the country’s beliefs and strict laws – something Google has already done.

But it looks like someone in China with a strong interest in human rights activists (oh, I don’t know, maybe the government?) and pissed Google off by playing with its products and customers. I’m impressed that Google has the guts to stand up to the Chinese government. Stay tuned for more.
