Couples across the country are looking to cash in on a little luck from the calendar, and one Yuba County official is mixing in the Summer of Love to his wedding.

Today’s date, 07/07/07 for short, is seen as lucky because of the rare occurrence of sevens in the day, month and year. Because of this, couples are flocking to the altar to get a little bit of that luck.

Yuba County Supervisor John Nicoletti will be marrying his bride-to-be, Maggie, at a hop farm in Wheatland. They reportedly will be joined by about 400 former hippies to celebrate their nuptials and the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love.

“We decided to make it a Woodstock wedding,” said Nicoletti, who is in his 40s.

The couple chose its date two years ago and have been planning for it ever since. The vows will be exchanged at 7:07 p.m. by a creek on the farm, which will be turned into a hippie scene. The dry valley summer will keep it from becoming the mud-bogged mess that the original 1969 Woodstock concert was.

Some of the former hippies coming to the wedding have gone from playing their guitars for a little change in the case to becoming educated leaders in the area, Nicoletti said. They’ll be pulling out their guitars again on the farm in Wheatland.

“Guys will jam like the old days,” Nicoletti said.

Volkswagens will get priority parking for the wedding.

Local churches haven’t noticed much of an increase in the number of weddings. Most said today meshes with their usual summer batch of weddings.

The Rev. Jerry Kramer of the Lowcountry Presbyterian Church in Charleston, S.C., won’t be officiating any wedding ceremonies today, but he’s conducted three weddings over the past week.

He said that while seven is a number of great spiritual significance in the Bible that is often associated with “completeness” or “perfection,” most couples have likely chosen the date because of seven’s perceived association with luck and magic.

“No doubt, some people credit luck or a series of flukes for bringing them mysteriously together, but I like to say there are no coincidences, only providences,” he said.

His advice to those getting married on the epic date is to put more stock in finding out their “love language,” or how they best communicate their feelings than in a lucky set of numbers.

“It’s important to listen and express caring behaviors,” Kramer said. “Find the things that keep your relationship rich and exciting.”
