Vintage aircraft performed rolls and spins and the roar of a U-2 spy plane shook the ground Friday afternoon at the Yuba County Airport.

An estimated 100 spectators had their eyes trained to the skies above the airport watching stunt fliers perform thousands of feet in the air at the first day of the three-day Golden West Experimental Aircraft Association Regional Fly-in and Air Show.

The annual event continues today and Sunday. Gates will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the air show itself from 1 to 5:30 p.m.

Admission is $15 for adults; $10 for Experimental Aircraft Association members; $5 for fly-in pilots and passengers as well as children ages 8 to 17 years. Children 7 years old and younger get in free.

The show features Rob “The Tumbling Bear” Harrison, who has flown in air shows for 15 years. His father was a blimp pilot in the Navy who started Harrison flying at 6 years of age.

Sixty years later, Harrison flies to pass his passion on to kids today.

“I want kids to know if they work at something, they can do anything,” Harrison said. “The only limits on kids nowadays are the laws of physics and the limits they put on themselves.”

The show kicks off with members of the Liberty parachute team guiding a large American flag through the sky during the national anthem. The group will open today and Sunday as well.

Parts of Harrison’s performance showed that even the laws of physics could be “bent” under the right conditions. One of his moves has Harrison taking a break from the twists and turns to appear as if he was flying backwards.

Visitors can also get a closer look at some of the airplanes flying in the show, or many others that will be parked on the apron. Numerous exhibits, workshops and forums will cover topics about everything flight and aircraft related.
