Plenty of fun at Colusa Fair

June 9, 2007

Hot dogs, fried Twinkies and a ferris wheel were all warmed up for the beginning of the Colusa County Fair on Thursday night.

The theme of this year’s fair is “Your Brand of Fun,” and there is more than enough fun to go around.

For thrilling fun, there are the many rides from Midway of Fun scattered throughout the fairgrounds. To test the limits of appetites and arteries, there are plenty of deep-fried snacks waiting at the food stands.

Thursday night also offered tamer fun with the first glimpse of the cattle for the livestock auction on Saturday morning. Shayne Meyers, 9, Williams, had the 4-H champion steer in the T.K. Marshall Arena. She had been working with the steer since November.

“Winning was definitely cool,” Meyers said grinning.

The fun of the fair is enough for a child to get lost in. Volunteers from Colusa County are helping to make sure that if a child is lost, he or she is reunited with Mom and Dad a little faster through a free child identification program.

With a few short questions, a few fingerprints and a photo, parents can make it easier for police to find their children if they disappear.

“It’s a very good tool for helping to bring a lost child home,” volunteer Judy Busath said.

More brands of fun are coming this weekend with a downtown parade today and two Saturday evening performances by cover band California Beach Party.

The final day will feature the twisted carnage of the annual Destruction Derby Sunday at 7 p.m.

Gates open today at 5 p.m. and at noon Saturday and Sunday. The exhibit halls will close at 11 p.m., and the rest of the fair will close at midnight all three days.

General admission each day is $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-12 and free if they’re 5 or under. Bleacher seats for Sunday’s Destruction Derby are $10.
